It is said to be named after the Caucasian town of shemakha. which has some very fine kilims. It is woven by weft-wrapping with an extra weft in the ground weave to support the structure and is used to weave bags. It is very hard weaving, heavy with finest workmanship in Persia. They also weave silk with nice motifs on it.
